Experience an unforgettable private 4-day trip from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert, traveling through the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains, Agdez, and the scenic Dades Valley. This exclusive journey takes you to the heart of Merzouga Desert, where you’ll enjoy camel trekking, a magical night in a desert camp, and authentic Berber hospitality. Perfect for travelers seeking comfort, flexibility, and a deep cultural experience in southern Morocco.
Your adventure with Go Sahara Morocco begins early as we leave the red walls of Marrakech behind and climb into the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains. The Tizi n’Tichka pass, winding its way to over 2,260 meters, offers spectacular views that change with every curve. You’ll notice how the landscape transforms from lush valleys to rugged mountain terrain, with Berber villages clinging to hillsides like ancient sentinels.
We’ll pause at the magnificent Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has stood for centuries as a testament to Morocco’s architectural brilliance. Walking through its earthen corridors, you might recognize it from films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones, but the real magic lies in imagining the countless caravans that once stopped here on the trans-Saharan trade routes.
After lunch in the movie-making town of Ouarzazate, we continue through the fragrant Agdez region, where date palms begin to outnumber other trees. The Draa Valley unfolds before us like a green ribbon through the desert, with thousands of palm trees creating shade and sustenance for the villages nestled within. By evening, we arrive in Zagora, where the famous sign declares “Tombouctou 52 jours” (Timbuktu 52 days by camel), reminding us of the ancient caravan routes that once connected these distant lands.
Accommodation: Traditional hotel or riad in Zagora
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After a leisurely breakfast, we venture deeper into Morocco’s desert heartland. Our first stop is the ancient village of Tamegroute, home to a centuries-old Quranic library containing rare Islamic manuscripts, some dating back to the 13th century. The village is also famous for its distinctive green pottery, crafted using techniques passed down through generations. You’ll have time to meet local artisans and perhaps take home a piece of this living tradition.
The landscape grows more dramatic as we approach Erg Chigaga, Morocco’s largest and most remote dune system. Unlike the more accessible Merzouga dunes, Chigaga feels truly wild and untouched, stretching over 40 kilometers of pristine sand. Here, with Go Sahara Morocco, you’ll experience the Sahara in its purest form.
As the afternoon sun begins its descent, we reach our desert camp. You’ll mount your camel for an unforgettable trek into the dunes, watching as the sand turns from gold to copper to rose in the fading light. The silence is profound, broken only by the soft footfalls of your camel and the whisper of wind across the dunes. After a traditional Berber dinner under a canopy of stars, local musicians share the ancient rhythms of the desert around a campfire, and you’ll understand why people have been drawn to this landscape for millennia.
Accommodation: Private desert camp in Erg Chigaga
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Wake before dawn if you can—the sunrise over Chigaga’s dunes is a sight that stays with you forever. After breakfast at camp, we begin our journey northward, taking the rugged off-road route through the desert’s edge. This less-traveled path, expertly navigated by your Go Sahara Morocco driver, reveals a different side of the Sahara: flat expanses of hammada (stone desert), distant mountains shimmering in the heat, and the occasional nomad tent in the distance.
We pass through Foum Zguid, a frontier town where the desert truly begins, before continuing to Tazarine, known for its fossil-rich terrain. The landscape gradually shifts as we approach the Dades Valley, with the earth taking on shades of red and pink. The Dades Gorge, carved over millennia by the Dades River, rises around us with towering rock formations that seem to defy gravity.
This evening, you’ll stay in a charming guesthouse overlooking the valley, where the air is cool and fresh, and the sound of flowing water is a welcome change from the desert silence. The local families who run these guesthouses take pride in their hospitality, serving home-cooked meals that showcase the flavors of the region.
Accommodation: Traditional guesthouse in Dades Valley
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Your final day with Go Sahara Morocco begins with a leisurely breakfast overlooking the stunning Dades Valley. We start by exploring more of the valley in the morning light, when the rock formations cast long shadows and the colors are at their most vivid. Photographers often call this the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs” for the ancient fortified homes that dot the landscape.
Next, we continue to the spectacular Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone cliffs rise 300 meters on either side of a narrow corridor. The river that carved this geological masterpiece still flows through the gorge, creating a cool oasis that feels worlds away from the desert heat. Take your time walking through the gorge, looking up at the tiny strip of sky visible between the towering walls, and watching rock climbers tackle the challenging routes.
After exploring the gorge, we begin our journey back to Marrakech, retracing our route through the Valley of Roses, known for its fragrant rose water production each spring. We’ll pass through Skoura’s palm groves and stop again in Ouarzazate if you’d like to revisit any sites or grab lunch at one of the local restaurants.
The return journey through the High Atlas Mountains offers a different perspective, as the afternoon light paints the peaks in warm hues. As we descend from Tizi n’Tichka pass and Marrakech appears in the distance, you’ll carry with you memories of four extraordinary days—from mountain passes to palm oases, from ancient kasbahs to endless seas of sand. Your Go Sahara Morocco driver will drop you at your accommodation in Marrakech by early evening, with your heart full of desert magic and stories to last a lifetime.
Accommodation: Return to Marrakech (accommodation not included on Day 4)

For the off-road sections through Erg Chigaga desert, we use specially equipped 4x4 vehicles that can handle the sandy terrain safely. All our vehicles are regularly maintained and driven by experienced drivers who know the routes intimately.
Our desert camps offer a blend of authentic Berber experience with modern comfort. Each camp features traditional nomad-style tents equipped with comfortable beds, pillows, and blankets. The camps have shared bathroom facilities with toilets and showers (some with hot water, depending on the camp). We can also arrange luxury camps with private en-suite tents if you prefer additional comfort. The camps include a communal dining tent where delicious traditional meals are served.
We recommend bringing layers as temperatures vary significantly between day and night. Essentials include comfortable walking shoes, sandals, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a light scarf for sun and sand protection, warm clothing for cool evenings (especially in winter months), and a light jacket. Don't forget your camera, personal toiletries, and any medications you need. A small flashlight or headlamp is useful for nighttime. In summer, lightweight breathable clothing is essential, while winter months (November-February) require warmer layers as nights can be quite cold.
es, this private tour with Go Sahara Morocco is suitable for all ages. The pace is flexible and can be adjusted to accommodate your group's needs. The camel rides are optional—if anyone prefers not to ride, we can arrange 4x4 transport to the desert camps instead. The walking involved is minimal and mostly optional. We regularly welcome families with young children and older travelers. Just let us know about any specific requirements when booking, and we'll tailor the experience accordingly.
Morocco's desert can be visited year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the most comfortable temperatures with warm days and pleasant evenings. Summer (June-August) is very hot during the day but offers spectacular clear skies and warm nights perfect for sleeping under stars. Winter (December-February) has cooler days and can be cold at night, but you'll enjoy crisp, clear weather and fewer tourists. Go Sahara Morocco operates this tour throughout the year, adapting to seasonal conditions.
Yes, all meals are included from breakfast on Day 1 through lunch on Day 4 (3 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 3 dinners). Meals feature traditional Moroccan cuisine including tagines, couscous, fresh salads, seasonal fruits, and mint tea. We're happy to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or other dietary requirements—just inform us when booking. Our cooks prepare fresh meals daily, and we always ensure there's plenty of variety and quantity.
Day 1 involves approximately 6-7 hours of driving from Marrakech to Zagora with stops. Day 2 is lighter with about 3-4 hours to reach Erg Chigaga. Day 3 includes roughly 5-6 hours through the desert route to Dades Valley. Day 4 is the longest at about 7-8 hours returning to Marrakech. However, these are not continuous drives—we make regular stops for photos, bathroom breaks, refreshments, and sightseeing. Your Go Sahara Morocco driver will adjust the pace to your comfort level.
