Day 1: Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Dades Valley (330 km)

Morning: Leaving Marrakech
Your private desert adventure starts with a pickup from your Marrakech hotel in the morning. Travel comfortably in a 4×4 or minivan with air conditioning and a driver-guide who knows what they’re doing.

The trip goes on through the beautiful High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which is 2,260 meters above sea level. Enjoy winding mountain roads that give you a view of Berber villages built into the hills, terraced farmlands, and, in the winter, peaks covered in snow. There are a few stops for pictures and a break with traditional mint tea at a local cooperative.

Ait Ben Haddou at noon
Get to Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most famous kasbah and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, around noon. Major movies and TV shows, like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia, have used this historic fortified village as a setting. Walk through its narrow streets, climb to the top for great views, and learn about traditional Berber architecture. A restaurant near the kasbah serves lunch.

Afternoon: Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley
After lunch, keep going toward Ouarzazate, which is also called the “Gateway to the Sahara” and the “Hollywood of Africa.” You can go to either the Atlas Film Studios or the Taourirt Kasbah, depending on what you want to do.

After that, the route goes through the beautiful Valley of Roses, which is known for its annual rose festival. It gets to the Dades Valley in the late afternoon. See amazing scenery, like the Monkey Fingers rock formations and the Dades Gorges, which are very dramatic.

Evening—spend the night in Dades Valley
Get to your traditional riad or hotel in the Dades Valley. Enjoy a tasty Moroccan dinner with tagine, couscous, and other local dishes, and then spend the night in a cozy room with stunning mountain views.

Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga Sahara Desert (260 km)

Morning: After breakfast, depart for one of Morocco’s natural wonders—Todra Gorge. The canyon walls rise up to 300 meters high in some places, creating a dramatic corridor that’s popular with rock climbers. Take a leisurely walk through the gorge, feeling the cool air and admiring the sheer cliff faces. Visit local Berber villages and observe traditional irrigation systems.

Midday: Continue your journey through the Ziz Valley, an endless palm grove oasis stretching along the river. Stop at panoramic viewpoints to photograph the lush greenery contrasting against the arid landscape. Lunch in Erfoud or Rissani, towns known for fossil workshops and as gateways to the desert.

Afternoon: Arrive in Merzouga, the edge of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, in the late afternoon. Leave your main luggage at the hotel and transfer to your desert camp. Begin your unforgettable camel trek into the Sahara Desert as the sun begins its descent. Your camel caravan will be led by experienced local guides wearing traditional blue Tuareg clothing. The trek lasts approximately 1–1.5 hours.

Evening: Reach your luxury desert camp nestled among the towering dunes. Watch the spectacular sunset paint the sand dunes in shades of orange, pink, and gold—a photographer’s paradise. After sunset, enjoy a traditional Berber dinner under the stars, accompanied by live Berber music around the campfire. Your nomadic hosts will play drums and teach you local songs. Sleep in a comfortable private tent equipped with real beds, linens, and traditional Berber decor. The silence of the desert and the star-filled sky create an unforgettable experience. Stargazing in the Sahara, far from light pollution, reveals the Milky Way in stunning clarity.

Day 3: Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Ifrane → Fes (470 km

Early Morning: Wake before dawn for an optional sunrise camel trek or climb the nearest dune to witness the magical sunrise over the Sahara. The shifting colors and long shadows across the sand create breathtaking photo opportunities. Return to camp for a hearty Berber breakfast.

Morning: Depart Merzouga and begin the journey northward toward Fes. Drive through the Ziz Valley once again, passing through Errachidia. The landscape gradually transforms from desert to the Middle Atlas Mountains, showcasing Morocco’s incredible geographical diversity.

Midday: Stop in Midelt, the “apple capital” of Morocco, for lunch. This town sits between the Middle and High Atlas ranges and serves as an important crossroads.

Afternoon: Continue through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, home to Barbary macaque monkeys. Stop in Azrou to observe and photograph these playful primates in their natural habitat. Visit Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” due to its European-style architecture, clean streets, and alpine climate. See the famous stone lion sculpture and enjoy the contrast with the desert you left behind.

Evening: Arrive in Fes, Morocco’s cultural and spiritual capital, by early evening. Your driver will drop you at your Fes accommodation (riad, hotel, or airport), marking the end of your incredible 3-day desert journey from Marrakech to Fes.
