3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Family Desert Tour

This short but full trip takes you from the busy city of Marrakech through the High Atlas Mountains and the beautiful Tizi n’Tichka pass. On the first day, you’ll stop at Aït Ben Haddou, where kids love to explore the maze-like passages of the old kasbah. Movies such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones have featured these passages. You have lunch in Ouarzazate, then go through the Valley of Roses and into the Dades Valley. Your first night is in a hotel that is good for families.
The main event on day two is the trip to Merzouga. You’ll cross the stunning Todra Gorges, where canyon walls rise 300 meters above you, and then by late afternoon you’ll be at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. The camel trek starts here. It will take about 90 minutes to get to your desert camp through the golden sands. Even little kids do exceptionally well with this, thanks to patient guides and comfy saddles. A night in a traditional Berber camp includes dinner under the stars, traditional music, and the kind of deep silence that only the desert can provide.
On the third day, you’ll wake up before dawn (kids don’t complain much once they see the sunrise painting the dunes orange and pink) and ride back to Marrakech. You’ll take a different route through the beautiful Draa Valley, which has palm groves and old kasbahs.

✅ Activities included: Kasbah exploration, camel trekking, sunset and sunrise viewing, traditional dinner and music, sandboarding

Best for: Families with limited time or younger children (ages 4+).

📅 Available daily | 🕗 Duration: 3 days/2 nights | 🧭 Guided experience

4 day from Marrakech to Merzouga

4-Day Fes to Sahara Desert Family Adventure

This family desert tour of Morocco starts in the mediaeval wonder of Fes and takes a different route that shows off Morocco’s amazing variety.

On the first day, you go through the Middle Atlas Mountains, where you might see Barbary macaques in the cedar forests near Azrou. Kids always love this. You’ll go through Ifrane, which is known as “Morocco’s Switzerland” because of its mountain architecture. Then you’ll get to the Ziz Valley, which has thousands of palm trees.
On the second day : you go from Erfoud, which is known for its fossils, to Merzouga. Many families go to a fossil workshop where kids can learn about the ancient sea that used to cover the Sahara and even buy small fossils as keepsakes. During the afternoon camel ride to camp, your family will have ample opportunity to acclimatize to the rhythms of the desert.
Day three : is the adventure day. You take a 4×4 tour of the Erg Chebbi dunes, meet nomadic families (kids love meeting nomad kids and comparing their very different daily lives), explore the seasonal Sriji Lake if there’s water, and visit the village of Khamlia, where Gnawa musicians share their African-rooted musical traditions. You will spend a second night in the desert, which will give you time to really get used to this strange place.

✅ Activities included:  Wildlife spotting, fossil workshops, extended camel trekking, 4×4 desert exploration, nomad family visit, Gnawa music experience, two desert nights

Best for: Families wanting deeper immersion (ages 6+).

📅 Available daily | 🕗 Duration: 4 days/3 nights | 🧭 Guided experience

4-Day Fes to Sahara Desert Family Adventure

5-Day Morocco Family Desert & Kasbahs Tour

This full tour from Marrakech gives you time to really take in each place instead of just passing through. You might spend more time at Aït Ben Haddou, maybe having lunch at a family-run restaurant where kids can watch bread being baked in old-fashioned ovens. You will fully explore the Dades Valley, including trips to small Berber villages where people live much like their ancestors did hundreds of years ago.
The Sahara portion includes all the activities from the 4-day tour, but it offers you more freedom. You will have time to sandboard if your kids really enjoy it. Want to spend more time with a family of nomads? Your guide can make it happen. Having extra days gives you this kind of freedom.
The plan calls for one night in a comfortable hotel in the Dades Valley, two nights in desert camps (with the option to mix standard and luxury camps), and the last night in Ouarzazate or back toward Marrakech, depending on what you want.

✅ Activities included: All previous activities plus additional village visits, extended time at major sites, optional activities like quad biking (for older children), cooking class in camp, more flexible pacing

Best for: Families wanting a balanced mix of desert and cultural sites (ages 5+)

📅 Available daily | 🕗 Duration: 5 days/4 nights | 🧭 Guided experience

5-Day Morocco Family Desert & Kasbahs Tour

7-Day Morocco Family Discovery Tour (Sahara + Cities)

This is our signature family tour, combining the Marrakech to Sahara family trip with additional destinations that create a full picture of Morocco’s diversity. Beginning from Marrakech, you’ll spend a day exploring the medina with a family-friendly guide who knows how to make the souks exciting rather than overwhelming for children—hunting for spices, watching craftsmen, perhaps taking a short cooking class together.
The journey then follows an enhanced version of the 5-day tour, with additions like a stop at the Todra Gorges for a family-friendly hike through the canyon, more time for swimming if you visit during warmer months, and an extra desert night that allows for a sunrise 4×4 excursion to hidden parts of the dunes most tourists never see.
The return route includes a full day in the Ouarzazate region, visiting the Atlas Film Studios (children love seeing where movies are made) and additional kasbahs. The final day returns you to Marrakech with time for last-minute souvenir shopping and perhaps a celebratory dinner.

Luxury option available: Upgrade to include stays at family-friendly riads in cities, luxury desert camps with proper beds and private bathrooms, and additional comfort amenities throughout.

✅ Activities included: All previous activities plus medina exploration, cooking classes, film studios visit, extended hiking, extra desert experiences, comprehensive cultural immersion

Best for: Families wanting the complete Morocco experience (ages 7+)

Each tent in our deluxe campers has its own private bathroom.

Transparent Pricing with No Hidden Costs

When you book with us, the price you see includes everything that is listed: transportation, lodging, meals on the itinerary, a guide, and activities. There are no hidden fees, no required tips, and no pressure to buy more services. Clearly explain any optional extras, like quad biking or extra luxury upgrades, up front. Families who are in charge of their vacation budgets really need this level of openness.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Morocco Family Desert Tours

What is the minimum age for children on Sahara desert tours?

Kids as young as four years old can easily go on our family desert tours. For camel trekking, kids ages 4 to 7 usually ride with a parent on the same camel. This is completely safe and is usually what they want to do anyway. We've taken families with toddlers on tours before, but we suggest tours with shorter camel rides and more flexible schedules for very young kids. There is no age limit; we've had grandparents in their 80s go on family tours and have a great time.

Is the Sahara Desert safe for families with children?

Of course. When you travel with experienced local guides like our team at Go Sahara Morocco, the Sahara is very safe. We know our routes well, we use reliable vehicles, and our guides are trained in first aid and safety rules. The places we go are calm and friendly, and Berber communities are known for being friendly to families. The biggest "dangers" are small sunburns (which can be easily avoided with the right sun protection) and kids getting too tired from all the fun—both of which are easy to handle.

How long are the camel rides, and what if my child gets uncomfortable?

The average camel ride to desert camps takes 60 to 90 minutes each way. This is long enough to feel like a real adventure but short enough that kids don't get bored. The camels walk slowly, and we stop if someone needs a break. We can send a 4x4 to pick up a child or adult who decides they don't want to continue on the trek. But in our years of experience, kids rarely want to stop; the excitement usually keeps them going.

What are the sleeping arrangements in desert camps?

Our family tents are big enough for everyone to fit comfortably. You don't need sleeping bags because bedding includes mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Standard camps have clean bathrooms that everyone can use, but luxury camps have private bathrooms that are connected to each tent. The tents are in the traditional Berber style, but they have everything you need to be comfortable. We also give you extra blankets for colder nights. Thanks to the fresh air and deep quiet, a lot of families say they sleep better in the desert than at home.

What food is provided, and can you accommodate picky eaters?

All of the meals listed in your tour itinerary are included. This usually means breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We serve traditional Moroccan food like tagines, couscous, salads, bread, and fruit, and there is a lot of variety during the trip. Our chefs have worked with people from all over the world and can change the spice levels for kids. We can make simpler meals like plain chicken, pasta, or vegetables for people who are very picky about what they eat. When you book, just let us know about any dietary restrictions or preferences, and we'll make sure your kids are happy and well-fed.

Do you provide car seats for young children?

We can set up car seats for families with small children who need them. Please let us know about this need when you make your reservation so we can get ready. We also make sure to stop regularly on longer trips so that kids can stretch, use the bathroom, and get rid of some energy before continuing on.
